Parental controls

Asterune is designed to be safe and enjoyable for players of all ages. Parental controls give you direct oversight of your child's experience β€” from what content they can see, to who they can talk to, to how long they can play.

This guide explains how parental controls work, what you can configure, and how Asterune protects younger users automatically.

How Asterune determines a user's age

When a user creates an account, they provide their date of birth. Asterune uses this to automatically apply age-appropriate defaults β€” younger users receive stricter content filtering and more restricted chat settings out of the box, without any manual setup required.

In addition to the date of birth provided at registration, Asterune also uses automated signals to infer a user's age group and may apply additional protections if an account appears to belong to a younger user, even if a different age was entered.

Setting up the Parent PIN

Parental controls on Asterune are managed directly from your child's account and protected by a Parent PIN, a separate PIN known only to you that prevents your child from changing these settings themselves.

To set up a Parent PIN:

  1. Log in to your child's Asterune account
  2. Go to Settings β†’ Parental Controls
  3. Select Set up Parent PIN and choose a 6-digit PIN
  4. Confirm the PIN and save

Once a Parent PIN is set, accessing or changing any parental control setting will require it. Keep this PIN private and do not share it with your child.

If you forget your Parent PIN, you can reset it by verifying ownership of the account's registered email address. Go to Settings β†’ Parental Controls β†’ Forgot PIN to begin the reset process or contact Solarius support for assistance.

What you can control

Content filtering

Asterune automatically applies content filters based on the account's registered age. You can review and adjust the filtering level for your child's account from Settings β†’ Parental Controls β†’ Content Filtering.

Available filtering levels are:

  • Strict β€” maximum filtering, suitable for young children. Hides all age-restricted content and applies the most conservative word filter
  • Standard β€” the default for most minor accounts. Filters explicit content while allowing mild language
  • Relaxed β€” lighter filtering, intended for older teens. Still restricts explicitly adult content

Regardless of the filtering level set here, certain content β€” such as anything sexually explicit or graphically violent β€” is never shown to users registered as minors.

Chat restrictions

You can control how your child interacts with others on Asterune from Settings β†’ Parental Controls β†’ Chat.

Available options include:

  • Disable direct messages β€” prevents your child from sending or receiving DMs from other users
  • Friends only β€” limits DMs to users your child has mutually added as friends
  • Disable public chat β€” restricts your child from participating in in-game public chat channels

By default, accounts belonging to younger users have DMs restricted to friends only.

Voice chat access

You can manage your child's access to voice chat from Settings β†’ Parental Controls β†’ Voice Chat. Options include:

  • Enable or disable voice chat entirely for your child's account
  • Restrict voice chat to friends only β€” allows voice communication only with users your child has mutually added as friends

Note that phone verification is still required to access voice chat, and you will need to complete that process on your child's account if you wish to enable voice chat for them. See our Voice Chat guide for more details on how voice chat works and its safety features.

Playtime limits

You can set daily playtime limits to manage how long your child spends on Asterune from Settings β†’ Parental Controls β†’ Playtime.

Options include:

  • Daily time limit β€” set a maximum number of hours per day. Once the limit is reached, your child will be notified and their session will end
  • Curfew β€” set a time of day after which your child cannot log in (e.g. no play after 9:00 PM)
  • Cooldown period β€” require a break between sessions

Your child will receive a warning when they are approaching their daily limit so they have time to finish up. When the limit is reached, their account will be locked for the rest of the day and they will be shown a message explaining why.

Time limits can be overridden in the moment by entering the Parent PIN. This allows you to give your child extra time when appropriate without changing the overall limits you've set.

We recommend that 2 hours or less of daily playtime is appropriate for most children, but you can adjust this based on your family's needs.

Unauthorized purchases

Parental controls on Asterune do not currently include purchase restrictions at the account level. To prevent unauthorized purchases, we recommend:

  • Setting up a purchase PIN or spending limits through your device or payment provider
  • Using a payment method that requires manual approval for each transaction
  • Enabling transaction notifications on your bank or card so you're alerted in real time

If your child has already made an unauthorized purchase, please see our Chargebacks and fraud page β€” in most cases we can issue a direct refund without any impact to the account.
