Voice chat
Last updated
Voice chat lets you talk with other players in real time while inside a game on Asterune. Depending on how a game's creator has configured it, voice chat may work as proximity chat β where only nearby players can hear you β or as global chat, where all players in a session can hear each other regardless of where they are in the game.
This page explains how to enable voice chat, how the two modes work, how recordings are handled, and what creators need to know to configure voice chat in their games.
Requirements
Voice chat on Asterune requires a verified phone number on your account. You cannot send or receive voice chat audio without completing phone verification first.
To verify your phone number:
- Go to Settings β Security β Phone number
- Enter your phone number and select your country code
- Enter the verification code sent to your device
Once verified, voice chat will be available to you in any game that has it enabled. Your phone number is not visible to other players and is used only for verification purposes. See our Privacy Policy for full details on how phone numbers are handled.
Voice chat is not available to users under 13, as these users are not permitted to sign up for Asterune. Users who are identified as minors may have voice chat access restricted depending on their age and any parental control settings applied to their account. Parents and guardians can manage voice chat access from Settings β Parental Controls. See our Parental Controls guide for more.
Proximity chat vs. global chat
Each game on Asterune can enable voice chat in one of two modes, configured by the game's developer.
Proximity chat
In proximity chat mode, you can only hear β and be heard by β players whose characters are within a certain distance of yours in the game world. The further apart two players are, the quieter each sounds to the other, and beyond the configured range, you cannot hear each other at all.
Proximity chat is well suited to open-world games, roleplay experiences, and multiplayer games where positional awareness matters. It mirrors how voice works in the real world and keeps conversations naturally scoped to what's happening around you.
Global chat
In global chat mode, all players in the session can hear each other at the same volume, regardless of where they are in the game. There is no distance attenuation.
Global chat is suited to smaller game sessions, cooperative experiences, or games where team communication needs to be constant β such as strategy games or coordinated competitive play.
How creators configure voice chat
If you are a creator building a game on Asterune, you can enable and configure voice chat from the Game Options page in the Asterune Studio settings when your game project file is open. Options include:
- Enable or disable voice chat for your game entirely
- Select the voice mode β proximity or global
- Set the proximity range (in-world units) if using proximity mode
These settings can be updated at any time and take effect immediately for new sessions. Active sessions will reflect the change on the next join.
Our API documentation grants much more granular control over voice chat features, including programmatically muting players, adjusting individual volumes and attenuation curves, and accessing voice data (volume, mute status, etc.) for use in your game logic. See the Developer Documentation for full details on how to use these features in your game.
Using voice chat in a game
When you join a game with voice chat enabled:
- A voice indicator will appear in the corner of your screen showing when your microphone is active and when other players are speaking so you know who's talking at any given time
- Your microphone is not active by default β you must press and hold the designated push-to-talk key, or toggle voice activation so it's always on, to transmit your voice to others
- You can mute yourself or mute other individual players at any time without leaving the session. Blocked users will also be muted automatically
- Adjusting the volume of other players is available through the in-game voice panel along with adjusting your own microphone settings
Controls can be customised by pressing Escape to open the client menu and selecting Voice Chat. Here you can change your push-to-talk key, toggle voice activation modes, and adjust other preferences.
Recording and moderation
All voice chat sessions on Asterune are recorded and retained for 30 days for moderation and platform safety purposes. After this period, recordings are permanently deleted.
Recordings may be used in the following ways:
- Automated screening β audio is analysed by automated systems to detect abusive content, hate speech, or violations of our Community Guidelines
- Human review β where an automated system flags a potential violation, or in response to a report from another player, a member of our moderation team may listen to a recording
Recordings are accessed only for moderation purposes. They are not used for advertising, not shared with other players, and not provided to third parties outside of the processors listed in our Privacy Policy.
By joining a voice chat session, you acknowledge that the session is being recorded. All other participants in the session are subject to the same conditions.
Reporting voice chat abuse
If another player says something abusive or in violation of our Community Guidelines in a voice chat session, you can report it directly from inside the game:
- Press Escape or click the Asterune icon to open the client menu
- Select Report
- Choose the relevant player and select a category
- Add any context in the text field and submit
Voice recordings for the session will be reviewed alongside your report. In many cases, our automated systems detect and act on abusive voice content without a report being needed β but submitting one ensures the incident is on record and helps improve our detection.
For urgent concerns β such as threats or content involving minors β contact our safety team directly at [email protected].
See our Reporting page for full guidance on how to report in other parts of the platform.
